MEET THE TEAM
Huma Inay Space
x
Women Empowering Women Collective (WEWC)

We are a group of friends and creative individuals brought together by a shared vision and mission. Currently, our initiative operates on a pro bono basis, and we use our own resources to meet, discuss ideas, and work towards making them a reality. Most of our crew are currently employed elsewhere, but we envision this collective growing into a "true shared space", one where we create together, collaborate on projects we deeply care about, and, over time, build it into a sustainable source of livelihood. Our hope is that this work will not only support those involved, but also generate opportunities and meaningful livelihoods for the wider communities we care deeply about.

Each of us brings a unique set of skills, diverse backgrounds, and extensive work experience. What connects us is our deep care for community wellbeing and our commitment to creating an alternative space for creativity, learning, and collaboration in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan.

Our Collaborator

Collaborator & Forest Guardian
HUMA INAY SPACE x WEWC
Sumber - The Head of Village Forest Management, Tampelas Village, Katingan
Sumber is a Dayak Ngaju-Katingan man from Tampelas Village, whose life journey reflects a profound transformation within his community. In the past, he was involved in logging activities that once supported the village’s economy. However, following government enforcement in 2005, Pak Sumber came to realize that forest destruction was ultimately threatening the very survival of his community. This awareness became a turning point, inspiring him to leave behind old practices and commit to protecting the forest as a source of long-term life and livelihood for Tampelas Village.

This turning point pushed Pak Sumber to step into a bigger role in his village. Together with others in Tampelas, he got involved in the long, often exhausting process of fighting for community rights to manage their forest through Indonesia’s social forestry scheme. It took years of meetings, paperwork, and persistence, but in 2019 the village finally received legal rights to manage 6,303 hectares of forest.

With the trust of his community, Pak Sumber was then asked to take on the role of Chair of the Tampelas Village Forest Management Institution (LPHD). Since then, he has carried the responsibility of looking after the forest, not just as land, but as a shared source of life that needs to be protected and cared for for the long term.

In his role, Pak Sumber focuses not only on protecting the forest from fires, mining, and plantation expansion, but also on creating new pathways for community wellbeing through sustainable ecotourism. He promotes collaboration between villagers, village institutions, and partner organizations to responsibly and ethically utilize the forest’s potential—its biodiversity, rivers, and peatland landscapes—as sources of environmentally friendly and sustainable income.
For Pak Sumber, ecotourism represents a balanced pathway: preserving the forest while creating livelihood opportunities, so Tampelas Village can thrive with the forest, not at its expense. This is the vision he actively shares with Dini, encouraging Huma Inay Space to become a bridge between his community and wider audiences, supporting forest protection for his children, grandchildren, the people of Tampelas, and the future of Kalimantan.
